A conference of the World Printers Forum will accompany this year's WAN-Ifra India conference in Kolkata.

The events form part of a programme which includes newsroom and crossmedia advertising summits in the city, the "metropolis of east India" on September 21-22. It will be the first time the WAN-Ifra India conference has been held in Kolkata since its inception in 1992.

More than 350 news publishers and other delegates are expected from the across South Asia and from around the globe.

The World Printers Forum is also being held in India for the first time. Its chairman, Kasturi Balaji, is also chairman of the WAN-Ifra South Asia committee and director of Kasturi & Sons, publisher of The Hindu.

"India is the growth centre for media business where both print and digital businesses are thriving," he says. "Kolkata holds a pre-eminent position in the development of newspaper publishing and printing in India and I am sure that the city will play the perfect host to WAN-Ifra India 2016 and the World Printers Forum Conference."

The decision to host the event in Kolkata has also been welcomed by DD Purkayastha, who is a board member and special advisor to the president of WAN-Ifra, as well as being managing director and chief executive of Indian daily newspaper publisher ABP Group. "Publishers of East, Northeast and Bangladesh would be greatly benefited from this conference," he says. "Kolkata offers unparalleled combination of learning atmosphere and the creative heritage of India.

"I look forward to meeting the industry colleagues and discussing some of the hot button issues impacting our industry."

Three parallel workshops - on printing, newsroom and advertising topics - will precede the conference on September 20.

Managing director of WAN-Ifra South Asia Magdoom Mohamed says support for Kolkata as the venue has been overwhelming: "We are working to make this a memorable event for the news publishing industry in South Asia region."
