Hong Kong newsmedia publisher South China Morning Post has recruited Ian Hocking from News UK as its digital director of advertising.

Hocking was previously head of programmatic and data at the London outpost of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, and previously led agency sales and programmatic at ebay.co.uk.

SCMP is taking a digital-led route to becoming a global news publisher - committed to explaining China to the world - from its roots as Hong Kong's oldest print newspaper.

General manager of advertising and marketing solutions Romanus Ng says advertising clients will be able to maximise the influence of their brand to an expanded market as SCMP's audience grows internationally.

Hocking will provide "strategic direction and leadership" to deliver diversified and sustainable revenue across all SCMP digital platforms, and will be responsible for the company's digital agenda, internationally and in Hong Kong. "He will set a foundation for success at SCMP by ensuring digital operations deliver the highest quality experience, real business outcomes and market leading insights for SCMP's marketing partners."

Hocking led adtech and strategic partnerships at News UK, which publishes The Sun and The Times.

"Ian's proven track record in cultivating digital business with ad tech in the media and technology landscape makes him the perfect candidate to enhance our digital offering," says Ng. "We are confident that with his addition to our digital arsenal, SCMP will strengthen our ability to work with brands through digital storytelling and branded content, which will allow us to achieve our full potential as the region's leading digital media reporting on China and beyond."
