Closed loop colour will be a feature of a full automation upgrade on a Tensor T4000E single-width press at Finnish printer Suomalainen Lehtipaino Oy.

QI Press Controls has announced the order which combines its mRC-3D and IDS-

3D systems with DCOS controls - automating colour register, cut-off, colour control and dampening at the printing plant in Kajaani. It replaces an ageing system where efficiency "leaves much to be desired" and which required two desks per folder.

Suomalainen Lehtipaino Oy production manager Marja Niemi says its commitment to guaranteeing high levels of production quality meant a

better system was needed.

A total of 14 IDS-3D and seven mRC-3D cameras at Kajaani will take care of colour register and colour (ink-key control), dampening and cut-off control, with the new equipment directly integrated with Inventor (fountain control) and Perretta (ink).

"Expectations are high," Niemi says. "We are banking on achieving quality assurance levels which are second to none and anticipate that we will make major savings in terms of waste and ink. Our target is to save ten per cent in ink volumes, and 300 copies during the start-up phase."

The plant prints around one million copies for 50 different titles.

"So far the collaboration between QIPC and ourselves has been working out well, as planned. I'm extremely happy with QIPC's approach to work."
