Sequenced pre-inserting pays off

After decades of hand inserting, Malaysian newspaper company China Press has automated the process with the installation of three Ferag lines.

The decision to install the EasySert technology - with programmed MultiStack bundling and Navigator control - followed a visit to the Jurong Print Centre of Singapore Press Holdings. There Saturday editions of the Straits Times - with its four preprints and 230 pages - can weigh 1.2 kg.

Now daily editions of China Press and Nanyang Siang Pau, which run to several sections and more than 100 pages, are being processed at up to 30,000 copies an hour on each line at its own Kuala Lumpur production centre. Production manager Chin Tiam Ong noted a marked increase in reliability, while staff are enjoying the benefits of the technology.

The three EasySert lines have been configured to assemble the newspaper in several consecutive pre-inserting sequences. With the phased structuring of the newspaper from inside to outside, the demand on floor space stays low and the logistics of the intermediate storage of partial products remains manageable. Each jacket product is fed to the inserting module using JetFeeder hopper technology, with the insert product being introduced in split mode via two JetFeeders on the RollStream pre-collecting line.
