New drives and control systems will bring an elderly Wifag OF370 up to date at Black Forest printer Druckzentrum Südwest.

ABB has won the order to update the press in Villingen-Schwenningen in south west Germany - which prints newspapers including Schwarzwälder Bote - with drives and controls on the press itself, control consoles and production management systems.

New ACSM1 series drives will be supplied for one folder and two 12-couple print towers, providing speed, torque and motion control. New ABB ACS380 drives will also be provided for the24 ink ductors on the two printing towers.

Obsolete Wifag WPOS control units on the towers, folder and turner bar nest will be replaced by APOS solutions based on the AC500 PLC.

All seven existing consoles are being upgraded to a new conventional or touchscreen version, with MPS Production and MPS Inform data analysis upgraded to the PostgreSQL-based release 6 with its access to less expensive virtualisation.

The retrofits and upgrades are due for completion by the end of the year.
