Problems with press control obsolescence at the Butler Eagle are being addressed with an upgrade which replaces the front end RotoVision and PLCs.

Harland Simon has been commissioned to upgrade the Goss Uniliner press at the pennsylvania newspaper site.

Three RotoVision PCs and two drive ControlLogix PLCs are being replaced, with the future-proofing including additional Prima PressNet control screens (pictured). All control functions will be accessible via Harland Simon touch screens.

ControlLogix processors in the press control rack are also being upgraded along with the central maintenance and diagnostic capabilities via Allen Bradley RS Logix 500 software, enabling quick fault finding and maximising up-time.

General manager and co-publisher of the Butler Eagle Ronald Vodenichar says the upgrade will help eliminate obsolescence: "The continuing partnership with Harland Simon helps to guarantee press up-time with-off-the shelf components, new software and 24/7 support."

The project follows other Goss Universal upgrades in North America, Europe and around the world and a recent order to upgrade the same generation of controls on a Universal press at La Prensa in Panama, as well as to other sites in the US, Europe and Asia.

Installation and commissioning is scheduled for early September.
