A new best practice guide to newsprint handling and logistics launched today, can be downloaded as a free e-book.

'Optimised paper handling and logistics' is the result of a cross-industry collaborative project bringing together expertise from the whole paper supply chain, with the aim of establishing a generic reference for suppliers, transporters, converters and printers.

Paper is handled between ten and 20 times from when it leaves the mill to when it is put on to the press, with every manipulation of rolls and pallets carrying a risk of accidents and damage. Its high unit value makes specialised and correctly maintained techniques, tools and facilities for handling, logistics, storage and preparation for printing a priority. Substrates are the highest single cost for all printing and packaging applications.

Idealliance president and chief executive David Steinhardt says the guide is "a truly cross industry project" involving more than 30 organisations from every part of the supply chain and from different printing processes and paper users. "These associations and companies have contributed their expertise and more than 50 publications that the guide has drawn content from," he says.

The guide was launched at the Word Printers Forum in Kolkata, India, today ahead of similar events at Graph Expo in the USA, WAN-Ifra's World Publishing Expo in Austria.

Text of the 260-page guide is heavily illustrated and structured into 11 modules:

1: Paper & Cores - Wrapping & Pallets

2: Inspect, Report, Evaluate & Repair

3: Warehouse and Paper Store

4: Paper Handling Equipment

5: Roll and Pallet Handling

6: Transport - Securing & Lashing

7: Road Transport

8: Rail Transport

9: Transport - Containers

10: Transport - Maritime Shipping

11: At the printer - Paper onto Press

While the 260-page book has a cover price of $280, it can be downloaded free as an e-book from November, to people who register at www.ophal.info. WAN-Ifra deputy chief executive Manfred Werfel says the intention is to use the open cross industry platform to extend the guide and keep it up to date. "Everyone that registers to download the e-book will be able to receive updates," he says.

'Optimized paper handling and logistics' is a collaborative project made possible by the participation of: ABP, Axel Springer, Bolzano-Auramo, Cascade, Dalim, Earthpac Oy, ERA, FMS, Goss International, Holmen, Kasturi & Sons (The Hindu), icmPrint, Idealliance, IF P&C, Intakt, KBA, Malayala Manorama, Mondi, NOPA, Paperdam, Sappi, SCA, Sonoco-Alcore, SpanSet, Stora Enso, tesa, Times of India, Transwaggon, UPM, and WAN-Ifra.
