Workshops on key topics are part of the agenda for WAN-Ifra's World News Media Congress and World Editors Forum in Durban, South Africa.

Show up early on Wednesday, June 7 for a programme of roundtables, workshop and summit, starting with the half-day Woman in News summit, Breaking Through, which aims to increase the leadership and voices of women in news and to celebrate their success. More than 200 women from all spectrums of the media industry will be there, including senior female editors and journalists who are part of the regional and global Women in News community.

From midday, the Global Alliance for Media Innovation (GAMI) Roundtable - Media, Innovation and Sports: a Major Shift in Sight - brings a panel together to discuss opportunities. Sports news is a major driver for media innovation, both in content and contribution (image, text, data, real time and in depth analysis). It provides a solid platform for exploring new digital media tools and platforms and presents news organisations with unrivalled opportunities for immersive digital storytelling. Its competitiveness attracts major sponsors and advertising and reaches large audiences - creating a need to open new channels.

Big sports federations are seeking new alliances in order to find new business models, win negotiations of rights and access information, and this panel, drawn together by the WAN-Ifra organised GAMI will discuss the new framework and value chain and together with media, research labs and representatives of sports federations, seek to create seed ideas for new projects.

Two other events taking place that day are:

Small and Mid-Sized Publishers Annual Meeting (June7 from 12-2pm);

Press Freedom Roundtable (June 7 from 2-4pm) - Ten years on from the Declaration of Table Mountain, What state is freedom of expression in Africa today?

The 69th World News Media Congress and 24th World Editors Forum is being held from June 7-9. More details at the website. GXpress Magazine is a media partner.
