German newspaper publisher HKMB will act as a development and demonstration centre in a new cooperation including ABB Printing and 3TControl Precision Systems.

Spain-headquartered 3TControl brings density control system expertise to the collaboration with ABB, which is based in Baden, Switzerland. To this, HKMB, which has ten newspaper printing plants across Germany and Poland, will bring usability experience and a base to show real-life installations.

ABB Printing head Damian Staedeli says 3TControl's experience and technology will create real value for printers: "3TControl has a complete and proven product range for newspaper print automation with successful installations worldwide over the past ten years. "They have had many industry firsts, integrated density and register control, invisible microdot technology, all plate register control and water control and they continue to develop and bring new ideas and functionality to market."

3TControl chief executive Ian Banerjee says the collaboration with stable partner ABB is "really exciting".

"There are many new benefits we can offer through this cooperation to further help printers with better quality and print cost reductions.

"With ABB we can bring new possibilities to market, not only with new functionality for ABB's top level production management solution MPS Production, but also for customers that wish to only change the underlying electronics."

HKMB chief exective Kurt Übelher says his company was first a client looking for automation and "liked the 3TControl system and company a lot".

"They think like printers and understand the reality of print operations. They build systems for printers by printers.

"We are a real publishing and printing organisation looking constantly to be more efficient. We are always trying to get more from our print operations and automation is a key part of that. Our involvement in this cooperation helps generate new user ideas and provides a real world demo room for customers to visit and test-drive the system for themselves."

Already Schibsted Media's Bergens Tidende in Norway has signed up for an integration of register and ink density controls with ABB's press controls.
