DC Thomson's Aberdeen Journals has gone live with a new Atex system on its Evening Express.

The title is one of four in Aberdeen, Scotland, which have adopted Atex's DM.Print for print and digital production. The others are the daily Press and Journal, Aberdeen Citizen and Scot-Ads. Aberdeen Journals has been owned by DC Thomson & Co since 2008, and is implementing DM.Print to replace an older system.

Production of print editions being managed by DM.Print while digital publishing is done through WordPress, tightly integrated into the editorial department content creation and publishing workflow.

New features in the Atex technology include facilities to simplify selection of full and partial page templates, picking them from automatic selections based on page definitions and advert pages. A "full book" feature automates creation of the publication, through edition layout creation, pages, dummy content and adverts. Editors need only to assign stories to the available shapes, articles and pictures will be automatically linked and paginated without manual intervention.

DC Thomson senior IT business partner Raymond Barr says the Evening Express go-live was "one the easiest" he has been involved with. Other titles will follow in coming weeks, bringing the number of users to 150.
