New Year deadline for Google innovation applications

It's Christmas and Google has hundreds of thousands of dollars to give away to news publishers. So perhaps you should apply.

The search giant has brought its Google News Initiative Innovation Challenge to the Asia Pacific, and is looking for submissions by January 9.

Singapore-based regional public policy and government relations lead Gilles Demptos says with the submission period is pretty short, "we want to make sure we receive a lot of relevant applications".

Google says its GNI Innovation Challenge will fund projects that inject new ideas into the news industry up to $300,000, financing up to 70 per cent of the total project cost.
"We are inviting proposals from APAC news organisations for projects focussed on increasing revenue from readers, such as subscriptions, membership programmes, contributions and/or new digital products and services," says Demptos.

A panel of "Googlers and other tech industry executives" will review the submissions.
Applications are already open, and an APAC 'town hall' has been arranged for next Tuesday (December 11) at 3.00 pm Singapore time. More information on the GNI Innovation Challenge here, or email apacgnichallenge@google.com
