Harland Simon says it is on familiar ground with a project to upgrade controls on a Goss Universal at La Prensa in Panama.

The existing system will remain operational until the replacement is fully tested, with costs minimised by retaining elements which can still be used and supported.

Americas managing director John Staiano says it is an approach the company has used on many occasions on systems supplied by Rockwell Automation, EAE, Goss, Honeywell and manroland. Rolled out to a number of sites in Europe and Asia, it has also been used at Advance Web Offset in California, Star Phoenix in Saskatchewan, Canada, and more recently at Tribune-Review in Pennsylvania.

At La Prensa, four control consoles, MPU and on-unit ink, damp and registration controllers will be replaced. Four Bargraph desks will be replaced by P6000 touch screen consoles, with facilities including ink presetting, job selection, imposition creation and density curve set-up.

• And at the News Journal in Wilmington, Delaware, Harland Simon will replace controls on its two Goss Headliner Offset presses with MetroColor towers. Included are the upper level management system, control consoles and on-unit controls.

Staiano says the project is the culmination of years of extensive consultation between the two companies and the beginning of a new phase for users of similar equipment.

Unit and folder controls will be replaced with Allen-Bradley Logix processors with built in RSLogix 5000 diagnostic software, fitted into the existing enclosures.
