Wilkins gets a not-so-new job in familiar surroundings

Newspaper production environmental expert Dr Tony Wilkins has a new job, working for a different organisation and a new boss. But that may be all that's changing.

After more than a quarter of a century working as head of environment for News Corp Australia - of which Michael Miller is chief executive, he has moved to NewsMediaWorks, of which Miller is chairman (and of which another Miller, Peter Miller, is coincidentally chief executive).

One of Dr Wilkins' responsibilities has been as chairman of the environment advisory group of NewsMediaWorks, successor to the former Publishers National Environment Bureau.

Confused by the changes taking place in his life? Then consider that NewsMediaWorks has its offices at News' bunker in Holt Street, Sydney, and you'll realise that the new job won't entail a new route to work each morning.

News Corp haven't announced a replacement in their office - where Stephanie Fett was environment programme manager - and haven't responded to our queries.

However, NewsMediaWorks' Peter Miller has announced that he's thrilled top have him join them in championing the industry's track record in sustainability and environmental responsibility. "Tony's credentials are unparalleled," he says. "His expertise and experience leading our industry's approach to the environment have been gained at a time when sustainability has moved to the fore of business responsibility, so Tony is the ideal person for this role and we welcome him warmly."

Wilkins created News Corp's '1 degree' environment sustainability initiative - which has just celebrated its tenth anniversary (see GXpress) - and helped establish newspaper recycling in Australia, which is currently running at 77 per cent. He also chairs the NSW Environment Trust's community and recycling subcommittee and sits on its waste and recycling subcommittee, as well as convening the corporate environment managers group.

NewsMediaWorks' environmental remit includes developing programmes to keep newspapers out of landfill, with newspapers claimed to make up only about one per cent of waste going to metropolitan landfills.

Prior to joining News Corp, Wilkins spent 12 years as a scientist in medical and forest research.
