A new online learning platform will help media management develop new business models, train top talent and "pragmatically" accelerate digital transformation.

WAN-Ifra chief executive Vincent Peyrègne says smaller and mid-sized publishers will be the winners from a new Media Management Accelerator toolkit.

"The vast majority of WAN-Ifra members are small and mid-size businesses around the world, who will profit greatly from a user-friendly, easily accessible, agile, modern learning toolkit such as this," he says. "The broad reach of the online platform - and the in-depth modules, combined with certification - will be a real boost for news professionals," he said.

The initiative, which has financial support from Google's Digital News Initiative - will allow WAN-Ifra to leverage its library of global best practice, insights and expertise. A panel of experts will offer a programme that will benefit all levels of rising talent and management in participating news organisations.

Director of global advisory Ben Shaw says the inherent advantages of open online courses will combine with the organisation's global reach, know-how and guidance, to enable media managers, executives and the entire industry to quickly and efficiently develop the understanding required to operate and innovate the business of news publishing in the digital age.

The programme features in-depth learning modules led by industry experts, focusing on: digital revenue strategy; using data to drive growth; innovation and culture; and paid content and reader revenue.

The Media Management Accelerator features case studies from top publishers including Die Welt (Germany), The Economist (UK), Amedia (Norway), next media accelerator (Germany), Verdens Gang (Norway), La Place Media (France), 24Sata (Croatia) and Aftonbladet (Sweden).

Shaw says early participants have received the programme enthusiastically, citing its simple user interface and in-depth content, good course structure and "inspiring" case studies.
