An order to modernise controls on a Geoman press at Times of India's Sahibabad print site will be EAE's largest in the country to date.

Publisher Bennett, Coleman & Co had been considering updating the elderly manroland press for some time, and the decision has been brought forward as technical defects and production stops became a regular occurrence.

The double-width press - of five four-high towers, one double folder and eight reel stands - will be brought up to the latest state of the art.

The site at Sahibabad, just outside Delhi, is one of 13 which produce the 179-year-old Times of India, which has a circulation of more than three million copies per day. Four presses at the site produce a portfolio which includes dailies the Times of India and Navbharat Times as well as other titles for Delhi and the surrounding area.

EAE will replace press and drive controls, and the obsolete Interbus loop system, with the existing PECOM system superseded by a modern EAE solution plus EAE production planning and presets. Three Desk 7 control consoles will replace the PECOM consoles.

Technical director Snehasis Roy says QIPC-EAE India offered a solution "very much geared to standards and based on hardware which is freely available in the market.

"The decision to equip the press with the most advanced control, drive and preset technology possible will profit us not only with higher availability but also with a leap in productivity."

German-headquartered EAE will take care of the planning, software development and project-related coordination, with operational implementation in the hands of QIPC-EAE India, which will source hardware locally and undertake installation, providing primary service and support and setting up a spare parts depot.

Preparations at EAE are already underway, with the retrofit planned for February to July next year.
