Amazon ups classifieds push in India

Plans for a global Amazon classifieds site have kicked off with a 'tiny' operation in India.

AIM Group's Radhika Sachdev has reported that the small 'peer-to-peer' buy-and-sell site in Bangalore is part of a global Amazon programme.

The service is similar to that offered by its wholly-owned Indian domain, Junglee.com since 2014. "But now it's moved from Junglee to Amazon.in, it bears watching even more," Sachdev says.

Amazon will consider expansion of the 'sell as individual' concept into other cities in India - where the market is estimated at $36 billion this year - after assessing results in Bangalore.

AIM reported "mixed results" with the site, which was limited in the number of categories.

Sachdev says Amazon has made major investments in India - an estimated US$2 billion during the past couple of years, and $5 billion overall, including the opening of six fulfillment centres. "In August, it launched a used-book section on Amazon.in that was clearly a precursor to more secondhand sales."

Amazon has also been "aggressively challenging" Flipkart, the ten-year-old e-commerce site based in Bangalore which owns fashion site Myntra.
