Ritu Kapur of India's TheQuint.com and Singapore Press Holdings' editor-in-chief Warren Fernandez are among new board members of the World Editors' Forum, to which David Callaway has been elected president.

WEF and WAN-Ifra elections took place at the end of the annual congress in Durban, South Africa, at which New York Times vice chairman Michael Golden was elected president of WAN-Ifra.

Golden (pictured) succeeds Tomas Brunegard, who was elected president of WAN-Ifra in 2013, while Callaway - who is editor emeritus and chief executive of TheStreet.com (USA) - succeeds Marcelo Rech, vice president of journalism at Brazil's RBS Group.

Sixteen executives from leading news media companies were also elected to new terms on the boards of WAN-Ifra and the World Editors Forum.

Golden says that he was able to help reverse world trends at the New York Times, and would like to help WAN-Ifra do the same. "Media freedom is going the wrong direction in many parts of the world," he says. "Building on the tradition of WAN-Ifra to increase the dialogue about that, bring awareness to it, and underscore the importance of the role that media plays in informing citizens and making society work better.

"Being elected president of WAN-Ifra is an honour and I take it as a vote of confidence. It is the opportunity to build on what we've done, and help the professionals operating independent media adjust their business models and prosper."

Helje Solberg, executive editor and chief executive of VGTV, Norway, was elected WEF vice president.

New WAN-Ifra board members are:

Nicolas Corneau, deputy general manager Groupe Centre France La Montagne, Representing UPREG, the French Regional Publishers Association;
