Lessons about consistency and repeatability in newspaper prin ting had clearly been learned when Horton Media and Rural Press North Richomnd repeated 2010 successes in this year's SWUG technical awards (writes Peter Coleman).

Excitement at the awards at the end of the group’s two-day conference in Hobart was replicated in Auckland, where staff celebrated their win. Mike Horler, deputy general manager, sais they would be ecstatic to have won: “Just look at the company we’re in.”

Earlier judge Gordon Cole said commercial jobs had accounted for a bigger proportion of the 52 entries from 14 print sites, and praised the quality of entries in the category, some of which scored ‘perfect ten’.

“We were determined to score harder, but the higher scores reflect continuing quality improvements.

Horton won the Flint Shield for printing of ‘NZ Aviation’ – the same title with which it won last year, and described by Horler as “an ideal customer”.

RRP North Richomd – part of Fairfax Media, and one of two group sites to take top prizes – was honoured for printing of  the 100-year-old ‘The Land’. Printing of Fairfax financial daily the ‘Australian Financial Review’ scored for both Rural Press in Mandura, WA, and host News Limited site Davies Brothers Hobart.

Newsprinters Shepparton was placed in two categories.

Buoyed by the news that last year’s SWUG scholarship winner had spent only $15,000 of his $20,000 prize, the organization lashed out with two awards for top apprentices. Apprentice of the year is Matthew Hoys from APN Toowoomba, while runner-up Travis O’Donnell from ‘Sunraysia Daily’ will also accompany him on the winners’ tour.

With SWUG celebrating its 25th conference – the first was at the ‘Gold Coast Bulletin’ in 1985 – there was also a surprise presentation for Bob Lockley, marking his 21 years as president
