News Corp's plans for localised digital printing in Australia are 'long term' according to incoming chief executive Peter Tonagh.

Meanwhile, his (also new) opposite number at APN News & Media Ciaran Davis boasts, "We're the only operator in the country who can do it at the moment."

The two new interviews published by The Newspaper Works, the industry group of which the two publishers are part owners.

In the first, Tonagh talks of challenges of mobile - for which a dedicated mobile newsroom is being trialled in Melbourne - and says he sees News as "a journalism business".

The interview also touches on recent acquisitions such as Unruly and the launch of News Corp Studios to create content for advertisers and handle custom publishing contracts (Qantas and Foxtel are mentioned).

"With... Storyful and Unruly, we are looking for new ways to grow digital revenue; both tap into new forms of advertising," he says.

Tonagh says "long term", new print technologies will be "very important" allowing allows shorter print runs which should be more cost-efficient as the technology evolves. "It also becomes easier to tailor a specific product to individual customers, which is possible in a digital print environment," he says.

While it is probably time to revisit media laws, the present situation "isn't something that has prevented us building a very strong business," he says.

In a separate TNW interview, Davis says a personalised campaign for Flight Centre "increased revenue by 35 per cent" and was in demand by more advertisers. "We're the only operator in the country who can do it at the moment," he says.

Other topics covered include radio, extending the Adshel Live outdoor brand, and the new Kpex media exchange partnership in New Zealand. "We want to be number one in every market where we are," he says.
