Newsprinters collaboration spawns new ideas and technology

Plans to use QI control technology to provide condition monitoring of its presses are the latest outcome of UK-based Newsprinters' ongoing relationship with the developer.

"They've already developed a special reporting button which allows us to record an incident, with data reviewed by QIPC who work with us to diagnose and fix a problem," says group technical services director Mark Ellington.

The relationship now extends over more than seven years. QI Press Controls ran an evaluation project at the group's Broxbourne plant from 2010, leading to what was then QI's "biggest ever" order in 2014. A total of 134 IDS-3D cameras were installed on the triple-wide manroland Colorman XXL presses at the Broxbourne site just north of London, and at Eurocentral, close to Glasgow in Scotland.

Staying in close contact has led to ongoing process of improvement, chairman Menno Jensen says. "It's is the only way we can ensure our systems stay ahead of those of our competitors."

Ellington says that through "listening carefully" to Newsprinters' ideas and requirements, they have been able to deliver innovative solutions when challenged with a problem.

One example is the IQM quality management system, which delivers a comprehensive data analysis of press performance using IDS-3D cameras and separate software.

"We are constantly working with QIPC to develop new features and to raise the performance of the systems," says Ellington. "We believe there is significant potential for using their systems to provide condition monitoring of our presses. For example, QIPC have developed a special reporting button which allows us to record an incident. The data is subsequently reviewed by QIPC who will work with us to diagnose and fix the problem."

The two companies have been able to develop their systems thanks to the expertise of the other. "That's how successful partnerships are built," says Ellington. "In my view both companies profit enormously from the collaboration and we are keen to continue working with QIPC to develop further innovative solutions for our printing presses."
