An upgrade of press drives on one of four TKS presses at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution follows a project covering conveyor controls.

Electronic Design Group will replace supervisory controls and supply new ABB DCS800 DC drives and a folder console operator interface.

Facilities and maintenance dirtector Clarence Jackson says the outcome will be a dependable system that offers accountability for press stops and system faults, along with other runtime efficiencies.

“Reduced maintenance costs and the elimination of obsolete parts will be an added bonus,” he says.

EDG worked with WRH Holdings on a Ferag conveyor system upgrade which uses the same technology and tools, with both remotely supported via a computer on the press equipment network.

The DC drive upgrade is on schedule to be completed by the end of 2014.
