Jason Seiken to join WEF roundtable

Credited as one of the news industry’s leading evangelists for the digital future, Jason Seiken has joined the roster for the World Editors Forum.

Seiken is editor-in-chief and chief content officer of the UK’s Telegraph Media Group, and has been at the forefront of digital growth and newsroom change for two decades.

The World Editors Forum is being held with WAN-Ifra’s World Newspaper Congress in Turin, Italy, from June 9-11.

Before joining the Telegraph last September, had a role at US public broadcaster PBS, transforming it into a top-25 video destination. He also founded PBS Digital Studios and launched more than two dozen iPhone, iPad and Android apps.

He had led programming at AOL Europe and was the founding executive editor of washingtonpost.com

Seiken will speak in a session on ‘The editor’s evolution’ at the WEF, which runs concurrently with the World Newspaper Congress and World Advertising Forum. More than 1200 chief editors, publishers and senior newspaper executives are expected.

Other Editors Forum speakers include:



- Janine Gibson, editor-in-chief of Guardian US, the Guardian's New York-based newsroom, where she leads a staff of reporters and editors who cover American news for an online, global audience of 27 million unique monthly readers, an increase in traffic of nearly 50 per cent year on year. The US site has won a range of awards, including AdWeek’s Hottest Newsite, 2013 Online Journalism Award for Innovative Investigative Journalism and Watchdog Journalism. She has also been integral to the Guardian’s coverage of the Snowden leaks.



- Javier Moreno Barber, editor of El Pais in Spain since 2006, where he has led the newsroom through a host of significant economic events. 



- David Callaway, editor-in-chief of USA Today, where he is responsible for the day-to-day coverage of the news staff on three continents and across all digital and print platforms.  He oversees about 300 USA Today journalists, a network of more than 150 correspondents and the communication between USA Today and Gannett’s 104 print and broadcast properties. 



-  David Boardman, dean of media and communication at Temple University in the USA, president of the board of directors of the American Society of News Editors and a former executive editor and senior vice president of The Seattle Times.   



- Mario Calabresi, editor-in-chief of La Stampa, Italy, who will join Jason Seiken in the session on the editor’s evolution. Calabresi is a long-time political reporter and a leading figure in Italian journalism.



- Robyn Tomlin, editor at Project Thunderdome, the New York City-based news hub responsible for producing non-local content for Digital First Media’s network of more than 75 daily and more than 200 non-daily newspaper sites. She is the former director of editorial innovation for The New York Times Regional Media Group, where she led audience growth and digital innovation efforts for 16 newsrooms in six states. 



- Sarah Marshall, the Wall Street Journal’s social media editor for Europe, Middle East and Africa. Before joining the WSJ in December 2013, she was technology editor at Journalism.co.uk, where she reported on innovations in the digital news industry and co-organised the news:rewired conference.



- Gabriel Kahn, professor of professional practice; co-director, media, economics and entrepreneurship; and director, Future of Journalism at the Annenberg Innovation Lab in the United States. Kahn worked as a newspaper correspondent and editor for two decades, including 10 years at The Wall Street Journal.

The 66th World Newspaper Congress, 21st World Editors Forum and 24th World Advertising Forum take the theme, ‘New voices, new reality, new energy’.

The Congress focuses on emerging business models and revenue streams. The Editors Forum examines innovations in journalism and newsroom organisation, while the Advertising Forum deals with successful strategies for increasing advertising revenues from digital, mobile and print.

An Info Services Expo will present innovative solutions from the international suppliers’ community, and this year a new ‘Energy lounge’ will provide a venue for discovering and examining disruptive technologies. The events are accompanied by an array of social events, gala dinners and lunches.
