Guardian Australia has almost doubled its base audience and is on track to turn a profit, trade magazine Press Gazette has reported.

The UK publication says traffic was up to 5.55 million unique browsers in May, against three million when the local site launched a year earlier.

Guardian Media Group is partnered in Australia by entrepreneur Graham Wood, who chief executive Andrew Miller says will have his loan repaid unless the venture is abandoned.

Despite problems with losses in the USA, Miller is confident that both it and Guardian Australia will come into profit, but believes that it will take “many years” to achieve.

He says the US operation is “well ahead of target and growing revenue nicely”. GMG statistics attribute about six per cent of its 100 million global audience to Australasia and a third to the Americas.
