Story telling secrets from Fairfax Media

Tips and tools from Fairfax Media on creating longform multimedia stories are on the agenda at NewsDesignAsia in Kuala Lumpur next month.

Executive editor for photography and presentation at the Australian publisher's Sydney Morning Herald, The Age (Melbourne) and the Australian Financial Review Matt Martel is slated to explain how the Fairfax print designers are now creating beautiful longform digital pieces using a non-code tool called Shorthand.

A series of tools for longform stories cover interactive charts, video and photos. The Bureau XP app then allows them to shoot and transfer video and photos, to top-and-tail them with their branding, and post to sites such as Facebook and Twitter "with no further human intervention".

Finally, another piece of software called Datawrapper allows speedy creation of interactive graphics to complement the story.

Useful examples you can check out include: SMH Magic Johnson; CT - Family Dirt and Andrew Lock.
