How the West was won... by a single news hub

Glimpses of the process that brought together the newsrooms of the West Australian and Seven Perth are promised at next month's Future Forum event.

Editor of The West Brett McCarthy joins Seven news director Howard Gretton for the event and will take part in a change-focussed panel session.

In an interview for Forum organisers The Newspaper Works, McCarthy says communication between journalists is now a lot more efficient, while Gretton suggests the move was a bigger change for the TV news team, although free of cultural clashes: "Staff were not only moved to a new building, but also had new equipment to work with," he says.

McCarthy says journalists can communicate easily and look at joint projects: "It's a hub, it's where the reporters gather," he says, adding that combined newsrooms are the way of the way of the future.

"Part of the future for this newsroom is being able to hire young people to come into a newsroom like this... with an expectation that they'll be able to work across everything. For young people getting into the industry, that should be an exciting prospect."

The two take part in a panel with NZME chief executive Jane Hastings during the plenary sessions on Sepotember 11.

The Future Forum is at the Sydney Hilton on September 10-11, with a programme which includes masterclasses, high-profile speakers and industry awards. Speakers include WPP founder and chief executive Martin Sorrell by video link, and News Corp senior vice president of strategy Raju Narisetti.
