Australia's news media industry went more or less nuts last night with its annual PANPA Advertising and Marketing Awards celebration.
It started with the little Blayney Chronicle's innovative 'best print single advertisement' - De-Sex Your Dog, He'll Be Less Nuts - and went from there. In the high-energy environment of the Hilton's Zeta Bar, excitement was high, and the noise levels related to the size of the winning contingent.
Nancy Veart of APN Australian Regional Media was named sales manager of the year, Lauren Butler of Fairfax Media named sales person of the year and Alice Bradbury of The Australian marketer of the year, with the award for marketing team of the year going to News Corp Australia's national retail marketing team.
There was kudos too, for the family-owned Courier, Narribri, which won trade campaign of the year in its community category.
Singapore Press Holdings' The Straits Times won the open contest for the best young reader programme, following what has become an global trend: Last week Kompas Media in Indonesia won the equivalent award in WAN-Ifra's World Young Reader competition.
Mark Hollands, chief executive of The Newspaper Works, which organises the PANPA awards, said the calibre of submissions was particularly high this year: "The finalists and winners showcase the creative, compelling and effective ways in which newspaper media promote their essential contribution to readers' lives, and to advertiser and media agency strategies."
A record 450 entries were viewed by a mix of panels and almost 90 independent judges.
