A new 22-unit pressline promises Newspapers of New England increased colour capacity and better quality for its own and its customers' newspapers.

The reconditioned and enhanced press - being supplied and installed by Florida-based The Siebold Company - is part of a long-term investment and restructuring plan for the Valley News and Concord Monitor.

Based on highly-automated Goss Urbanite and DGM 850 equipment, it will include advanced imaging, remote inking, colour registration and material handling facilities.

Printing of NNE's Valley News will move to the new press in Concord, New Hampshire, where the press will also accommodate the Concord Monitor and other publications, together with their growing commercial printing business. Valley News press and distribution staff have been offered jobs at the new facility.

The press gives the papers greater page capacity, more colour and what is claimed to be the best colour reproduction in the regional newspaper printing market. The single-width press can print two newspapers at once, as well as a wide variety of different size publications.

NNE president and chief executive Aaron Julien says TSC - which is the parent company of DGM and Smith Pressroom Products and exclusive distributor for Netherlands-based GWS Printing Systems - for its depth of expertise and extensive experience.

TSC's Dennis Schupp says the automated press system includes the company's Spraymatic G4 spray bar dampening, and an integrated blanket wash feature.
