Ongoing financial problems have led to the closure of Washington's Newseum, which will welcome its last visitors at the end of December.
Nearly ten million people have visited the privately-funded institution since it opened 11 years ago. It has also hosted numerous industry events including WAN-Ifra's World News Media Congress.
The Newseum building on Pennsylvania Avenue was sold to Johns Hopkins University in January.
Creator and primary funder of Newseum, the Freedom Forum says it remains committed to "continuing its mission to champion the five freedoms of the First Amendment and to increase public awareness about the importance of a free and fair press". Educational efforts will continue online and through public programmes.
