Hunter poses a bigger than ever Challenge in eighth year

Eight times now, former head of EidosMedia Australia has braved mud, sweat and tears to help raise funds for the Smith Family charity.

This year's event - a couple of weeks ago - now seems a long time ago "given how the world has changed since," he says, but still brings back memories.

With extra time at home, he has put together a report on how it went, with the reminder that there's still time to donate. "It might be a nice distraction too," he says.

De Briganti tells of an incident-ridden event, even before he got to the start, helping out in a road accident and with a co-challenger who had filled his diesel car with petrol.

The good deeds continued into the first day, helping another challenger who had cut her knee open, so the "brutal" four-leg journey took ten hours.

Despite the promise of a beautiful second day, a broken bike chain brought further meaning to "push bike" with six kilometres of using it as a scooter. The initial 6km kayak leg had already been written off as "too dangerous", and then the rain came. "Cold and wet, we started to suffer from hypothermia and had to change," he says. Leeches were an additional hazard not noticed until the last transition point.

The last stretch was also cold and wet, riding against rain, wind and a spume of mud from the front wheel. "But after another 10km we made it to the finish line, tired but proud finishers.

"Beer that evening never tasted so good," he says.

You can make all this effort worthwhile by using this link to sponsor Ludovico De Briganti, who says about $9,500 of his personal $12,500 goal has been raised so far, with the event total currently at $714,000.

"Help us break the cycle of disadvantage without even breaking a sweat," he says.
