Fame is making the front page … digitally

Digital newspaper printing technology has brought back the vanity front page, with a German newspaper offering its readers their “15 minutes of fame”. Daily newspaper ‘Berliner Zeitung’ has launched the ‘myPage’ concept – copies of the newspaper with the reader or a loved one on the front page – using Océ inkjet equipment. The idea is to place their picture (or their family) on the front page of its morning editions, to celebrate a birthday, graduation ceremony or other family event. The newspaper-configured JetStream inkjet is used to print special runs for customers who want to get themselves in print. Orders will be taken from a mere handful to hundreds or even thousands. The printer company’s Robert Koeckeis says users of the service are being charged a small set-up fee and then a charge per copy: “You print off a number of copies and send them to relatives or friends,” he says. “The front page items surrounding your announcement are exactly the same as in the regular newspaper.”
