Reliable product testing underpinned the creation of Bild Kaufberater (buyers’ guide), making it one of the most successful commerce journalism initiatives in Europe.
In an INMA Ideas Blog, Bild deputy editor-in-chief Timo Lokoschat and Computer Bild editor-in-chief Dirk General-Kuchel tell how Bild Kaufberater turned product testing into a growth engine.
They recall how, six years after the opening of Axel Springer’s new headquarters in Berlin, construction crews returned: Not for another office floor or a design update, but for something far less expected in a media building – a laboratory.
“A real one,” they say.
Floors were torn open, cables and pipelines were installed, and climate control and ventilation systems were built from scratch. The lab includes a soundproof testing chamber, robot-assisted test stands, a dedicated photo rig, and special floor suspension to ensure that testing washing machines would not shake the offices below.
What emerged in 2024/2025 was a testing facility on a scale unmatched by any other media company in Germany. It marked the starting point of Bild Kaufberater – today one of the most successful commerce journalism initiatives in Europe – built on a simple but radical premise: Don’t trust claims, test everything.
“This mindset is reinforced by our everyday experience,” they say. “A blender is advertised with a 580ml capacity – in practice, it holds only 470. An e-scooter promises 80 km of range – in our tests, it delivers closer to 60. A cordless vacuum claims to pick up ‘everything’ – but in a standardised lab test, it captures just 60 out of 100 gms of our dust-and-dirt mixture.
“These gaps are not exceptions. They are the rule.”
To measure them properly, Kaufberater relies on the combined expertise of two of Axel Springer’s most established special-interest brands: Computer Bild and Auto Bild. In particular, Computer Bild brings decades of hands-on and lab-testing experience to Kaufberater. This collaboration ensures that every test follows clear, repeatable criteria and meets the standards of true product journalism, not marketing copy.
“The rigour builds trust, but trust alone does not build a business,” they say. “Distribution does.
“While many commerce publishers depend heavily on search traffic – and are currently feeling the pressure – Bild Kaufberater took a different route. From the outset, we focused on direct audience access, especially via the homepage and newsletters.
“Instead of merely capturing existing demand, we aim to create it by surfacing relevant, timely, and often surprising product stories.”
This approach fundamentally changes the dynamic. A single well-placed article can outperform traditional news content and trigger significant purchasing activity within hours. One early example was a large-scale air fryer test covering 40 models, which generated more than a million views in a single day – and translated directly into substantial sales.
Editorially, Kaufberater operates across the full funnel. High-consideration categories, such as electronics and major appliances, are covered through in-depth comparative testing. At the same time, impulse-driven products – often lower-priced but highly practical – are identified through editorial judgment and real-time data signals, then amplified through high-visibility placements.
What emerges is a system where journalism and commerce reinforce each other. When readers trust the content, they act on it. And when they act on it, the business grows.
Lokoschat and General-Kuchel say the model has proven highly effective. “Within a short period, Bild Kaufberater has generated a nine-digit annual merchandise volume and established itself as a significant revenue stream – without compromising editorial independence.
“Manufacturers do not pay for any ratings or rankings; this is non-negotiable. In that sense, Kaufberater follows a simple principle: We finance journalism through journalism.
“What we learned is simple: If you invest in real testing, build direct audience access, and put trust at the centre, commerce journalism stops being a compromise – and becomes a scalable, resilient growth engine.
“More broadly, it challenges a common assumption: that commerce journalism must come at the expense of credibility. The opposite is true. The more rigorous the testing, the stronger the trust. The stronger the trust, the greater the impact.”
In the end, Kaufberater is not about selling products. It is about solving a problem. Consumers face overwhelming choice, inflated promises, and limited time. What they need is clarity they can rely on.
“That is where journalism proves its value – perhaps in its most practical form.”
