With its annual Newsroom Summit set to take place within the headquarters of Verdens Gang in Oslo (pictured), publishers can expect to hear what’s new in digital transformation and editorial innovation.
The WAN-Ifra event from November 18-19, promises insights from the leaders across the region who are defining modern editorial practices.
Among the Nordic speakers, VG’s Gard Steiro, described as “one of the most forward-thinking and experimental editors” – will discuss the changes he believes newsrooms need to make now. Politiken’s Amalie Kestler will talk about content development while NRK’s Helje Solberg and Amedia’s Veslemøy Østrem focus on planning for the 2030 newsroom amid uncertainty and rapid change. Finansavisen’s Margrethe Schmidt Hegnar will discuss delivering personalised recommendations while keeping editors in control of their relationship with their readers and business priorities.
In sessions on winning the next generation of audiences, the programme turns to how Nordic media brands are connecting with younger readers and staying relevant. VG’s development editor Øyvind Brenne and Øystein Aldridge – who heads Aftenposten’s standalone Vink entertainment site – will dive into strategies for capturing young audiences through platform-first formats and reimagined sports journalism.
To add to the Nordic flavour, the event is to be opened by president of the Norwegian parliament Masud Gharahkhani, renowned for getting Norway’s lawmakers to do the Viking Row during the World Cup. A highlight will be an evening at the Nobel Peace Centre at the end of the first day, with a visit to ‘The Price of Peace’ press photography exhibition.
A ‘behind-closed-doors’ Study Tour is planned for November 15-17, taking participants into Norway’s most innovative newsrooms spanning from print & digital publishers to public media and broadcasters. Visits confirmed include VG|Schibsted, NRK, TV2, Aller Media & Dagbladet.
