No presses? It's just another transformation for keynoter Stevens

Michael Stevens, who is director for print mastheads at Australia's Nine Publishing, has been announced as keynote speaker for WAN-Ifra's India Printing eSummit.

The virtual event takes place from September 23-24, with a strong line-up of otherwise all-Indian speakers joined by Michael Kiesswetter, managing director of Rheinische Post's AdLog business in Germany.

The two sessions a day start at 10am and 3pm, Indian Standard Time.

Publisher of high-profile dailies The Age (Melbourne), the Sydney Morning Herald and national daily the Australian Financial Review, is now owned by TV company Nine Entertainment following its purchase of Fairfax Media in 2017.

Following the closure of Fairfax's metro print sites in Sydney and Melbourne, and its sale of the regional publishing and printing business to what is now Antony Catalano's Australian Community Media, Nine is now the country's biggest publisher not to own any printing capacity of its own.

How that fits with Stevens' own views will make interesting listening. After 20 years as journalist on the Launceston Examiner and six as editor of the Canberra Times, he moved to Fairfax's then subsidiary in New Zealand as editorial transformation lead in 2006.

He returned to Fairfax in 2012 to a role in the 'Fairfax of the Future' project and then spent almost three years as operations director of its Australian Publishing Media. He is currently responsible for the print editions of the three Nine mastheads.
