'Courageous' COVID efforts win as INMA shares virtual prizes

Jun 02, 2020 at 09:06 pm by Staff

The presentations are virtual, but the achievement is real as INMA presented its 2020 Global Media Awards overnight, curiously with the support of Google.

With no outright 'best in show' this year - that honour was shared by all news brands for their courageous efforts in 'leaning in' during the COVID-19 crisis - category awards were evenly distributed around the world.

Regional standouts were New Zealand's two major publishers, Stuff and NZME, who took both Asia-Pacific prizes, and while India's ABP and Jagran Prakashan took top South Asia positions, the Times of India was also well-represented numerically.

So how do you put in that Parisian je ne sais quoi when the tables are bare in the Napoleon III circular ballroom of the Intercontinental Grand Hotel, and INMA executive director Earl Wilkinson has swapped black tie for an open shirt? The glamour of Jamaican TV host Terri-Karelle Reid - wearing a face mask to match her dress - helps, and there's chatter from Google's Chrissy Towle acquired as part of their GNI sponsorship.

We hope winners will add their own fun with a socially-distanced celebratory drink around the world (email your pictures to GXpress here and we'll add a selection to this page).

The 'best in show' award - in a first in the 83-year history of the awards - honoured "not just the 98 companies that submitted for the COVID-19 category, but to all who are digging deep to project the power, the passion, and the soul of news brands - especially when it matters the most," Reid said in the video presentation.

Of the rest, some 922 entries from 262 news brands in 44 countries were judged for innovation and excellence in growing audience, brand, and revenue. Reid said the most emotional moments came with responses to the coronavirus and its economic impacts, where 32 first-place recipients were selected from 185 finalists.

Ten regional 'best of show' winners, selected by judges from first-place recipients, were:

Best in Asia/Pacific, Regional/Local Brands: The Press/Stuff, New Zealand, for "Christchurch Mosque Shooting Coverage"

Best in Asia/Pacific, Global/National Brands: NZME, New Zealand, for "The People Programme"

Best in South Asia, Regional/Local Brands: ABP, India, for "Changing the Prayer and Praying For Change"

Best in South Asia, Global/National Brands: Jagran Prakashan, India, for "The Generation That Could Save Us"

Best in Africa: Volt Africa, South Africa, for "Volt Africa"

Best in Europe, Regional/Local Brands: Amedia, Norway, for "Converting Existing Print Subscribers and Gaining New Customers"

Best in Europe, Global/National Brands: Expressen, Sweden, for "Ready, Set, 70,000! How Expressen Went from 0 to 70,000 Subscribers in a Year"

Best in Latin America: Grupo Semana, Colombia, for "D.C. La Vuelta por Bogota"

Best in North America, Regional/Local Brands: Newsday Media Group, United States, for "Long Island Divided"

Best in North America, Global/National Brands: The New York Times, United States, for "Women in Congress"

The 16 categories of the Global Media Awards competition are divided into two groups, for global/national brands and regional/local brands. Entries were judges by 42 media experts from 20 countries during February and April.

Says Wilkinson, "If you separate out the COVID category, the themes that stand out in this year's winners are data and subscriptions.

"It is part of the 'new normal' for media that everything is data-infused and tilted toward reader revenue. Yet the COVID category yielded an amazing 98 entries, from which 12 finalists were selected, and two inspirational winners were announced. I can't say enough about the trust, innovation, and agility projected in these COVID campaigns."
