Lessons from transformation as Schantin reflects

Newsroom transformation specialist Dietmar Schantin is channelling lessons from his career into an upcoming book.

The founder and chief executive of the Institute for Media Strategies, he says the idea of a book has been simmering for a while, following "many years working with many newsrooms" to develop the holistic approach he has been using.

"While all newsrooms are different, and strategies are individually tailored for each of them, newsrooms also have much in common," he says. "They can benefit from one another's experiences as they move beyond digital integration to become profitable, sustainable and mission-driven companies in the modern media environment."

After lengthy thought about using his experiences for a handbook to support newsrooms facing digital transformation, he says the book is becoming a reality. "I hope to start people thinking, and bring them to this realisation that change - not just piecemeal change, but wholesale change throughout the organisation - is the right thing to do," he says.

As publishers face up to constant and disruptive change, he says the book - The Handbook of Digital Media Transformation - will be more than an overview, but a deep look at all the areas that should be taken together in a successful digital transformation, including audience, products, workflows and structures, people, tools and technology, and architecture. "I've had the opportunity to learn from this long experience, both at the Institute for Media Strategies and earlier in my career, and to understand better what management and staff can expect to occur throughout the process, the pitfalls and the successes... in short, what in my view and experience works and what might not."

Among projects in which Schantin is currently involved is the Wall Street Journal's WSJ2020 initiative. Last year editor-in-chief Gerard Baker said audience data and insights were driving a project in which changes would encompass content and products, workflow, people and technology.
