More than 1000 guests attended two open days at the new Goss Graphic Systems China factory in Shanghai during the course of the All In Print exhibition in the city last month.

The event was also the global launch of the Wisprint brand, under which the range of single-width newspaper, book, commercial and packaging presses have been marketed in China since 2016.

Among them is the flexible 50,000cph Wisprint Compact which was co-developed by the company - a subsidiary of global giant Shanghai Electric - and which features a quick edition change system for short-run print jobs, a split tower design for ease of cleaning and maintenance, and a newly-developed low profile folder.

Global director of sales Peter Kirwan says the rebranding of the product range is "to differentiate ourselves in the market, and establish a clear identity."

Kirwan - who has spent his whole career in newspaper press sales - introduced a tour of the 38,000m2 building and spoke of the commitment of the company, expressed through its investment in the giant facility. "I think we are the only press manufacturer in the world showing such confidence in our industry."

In an event which followed the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, learning systems and artificial intelligence were also to the forefront, with general manager and executive director of Goss Graphic Systems China Peng Yong speaking of a future in which smart printing machines were linked three-dimensionally in an intelligent network.

"Innovation has been the development concept of Goss Graphic Systems China for a long time," he told guests. "Innovative technology in our integrated printing systems will drive development and ultimately realise the goal of intelligent printing."

Alliances with specialist international makers deliver auxiliary systems such as splicers and pasters, dryers, conveying components and controls, and export sales director Paul Collinson stressed the single-vendor responsibility for the integration, performance and warranty of all items. "A very important part of our business is to provide ongoing back-up to our customers for service and spare parts, regardless of the age of the equipment," he said.

Wisprint newspaper presses come in single and double-diameter versions in eight and 16-page (broadsheet) formats, and with speeds from 35,000 to 80,000 copies/hour. The range also includes web presses for heatset, commercial and book printing, and a flexo press being used for both packaging and schoolbook printing.
