Senators plan their own probe into press freedom issues

An additional inquiry on press freedom - away from the pressure of Coalition control - is in the sights of Australia's Labor members.

An inquiry under the Senate's communications committee would have broader scope than that being undertaken by the parliamentary joint committee on intelligence and security.

Labor senator Katy Gallagher says that while the PJCIS is controlled by the Coalition, the communications committee is not and could have broader terms.

Both inquiries follow concern over police raids on the ABC's Sydney office and the home of a News Corp Australia journalist, as well as other freedom issues.
