East Malaysian publisher Unity Media Malaysia has extended its Televisual system to produce mobile and online editions.

The company, previously United Borneo Press publishes Chinese daily newspaper United Daily News.

The Miles 33 mobile and tablet Publishing system – which is powered by technology from VirtualCom – delivers editions to Android, Apple, mobile and desktop, and went live last month. It complements the Televisual Asset editorial system supported by Miles 33.

The system includes online and in-app subscription management which lets readers subscribe only once, but gives access to the e-paper editions from multiple platforms.

It includes a ‘read-as-you-download feature, useful for devices relying on slower cellular networks.

An offline access function allows readers to download content device for reading later where network access is not available, such as on an aircraft. Readers can also flag content which is saved in their account and accessible through other associated devices.

Additional content channels can be added to the news channel, providing for picture galleries, videos and website links.

Readers are encouraged to download the apps free from Google Play or Apple’s App Store, with in-app purchase of single editions or subscriptions enables conversion of casual readers to subscribers.
