Companion TV app Zeebox has scored 100,000 downloads in the first two weeks of its release in Australia.

The company – founded in 2011 by BBC iPlayer developer Anthony Rose – has reported users spend an average  31 minutes per session with the app. More than 500,000 visits have been reported with 110,000 of the app’s tags clicked.

The Australian launch followed those in the UK and USA. This week Ireland was added to that list. An upgrade there adds pay TV remote control capability on iPhone and iPad.

Rose says two-way remote control represents the next phase of integration between TV and the second-screen, enabling interactive, timely consumer experiences. “By acting both as a remote control and a channel detector, Zeebox further automates the delivery of contextually relevant content (and commerce) to consumers while they watch TV,” he says.

In Australia, chief executive Craig Blair said early results had outstripped expectations. “The number of downloads in Australia is many multiples higher than in the UK or the USA – adjusted for the population – proving that Australians actively embrace new, world class platforms,” he says.
