Settlement legalises use of disputed control interfaces

Owners of newspaper presses with third-party control interfaces no longer need to worry about the legality of their systems, following a settlement between two major vendors.

manroland Goss and QIPC-EAE – described in a brief announcement as “the leading suppliers of control and measurement systems for web-offset printing presses” – have jointly announced mutual settlement of “certain disputed copyright infringement cases”.

At issue was the use of “third party solutions” – presumably those of QIPC-EAE – which interacted with manroland Goss’s proprietary PECOM software and “require a respective interface license provided by the OEM”.

The settlement means that not only will the vendors not be taking their differences to court, but that their customers will be cleared to “run the printing presses in a legally undisputed manner”.

Both vendors make print control systems which are installed on a standalone or integrated basis on presses made by a variety of makers, with the aftermarket increasingly competitive as that for new presses dries up.
