Has regional media changed, inquiry’s survey asks

The Anne Webster-chaired parliamentary inquiry into Australia’s regional newspapers is asking members of the public for their views.

A new online survey powered by SurveyMonkey quizzes respondents on how they access news, whether that’s changed in the past year and whether they think the news media bargaining code has made any difference.

It also asks what respondents think are the issues affecting regional news services.

Chair of the federal standing committee on communications and the arts, MP Dr Anne Webster says news outlets in rural, regional and remote communities have closed their doors over the past ten years, resulting in “a substantial reduction of articles covering local issues.

“It is important that we listen to our communities about what's important to them,” she says.

The survey is open until February 11, 2022. New submissions to the committee can be made until January 28 – see the committee’s webpage for details.

• A separate parliamentary inquiry – into social media and online safety – was set up at the beginning of December, and has now closed for submissions.

It is due to present its final report by February 15, and “upon tabling the final report… will cease to exist”.
