PA project shows the scope of modern automation

Modernisation of a Tensor T400BE press at the Engle Printing Company in picturesque Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, is the latest stage in the evolution of the family owned business.

Founded in 1954 by Alvin Engle and his wife Pauline, the business started with a sheetfed press located in the basement of their home, and has now grown to include five-single width presses at the Hempfield plant they opened in 1999.

Plans have been underway since late 2017 to modernise the press, with DCOS Sweden called in in May for an upgrade which includes automatic register, ink density and cut-off control cameras and associated control and integration equipment.

The T400BE has four towers and one folder, and will have its existing WPC register system replaced by eight CRC4 closed-loop density/register control cameras, and the folder equipped with four PCT4 cut-off cameras. For ink density control, DCOS will integrate the CRC4 cameras with the existing Perretta remote ink system.

DCOS sales director Americas Ron Ehrhardt says the project is an extremely important one as printers struggle to make their presses more efficient and easier to operate: "It demonstrates the full capacity of our press register, density and cutoff inspection and automatic control capabilities," he says.

The equipment was being shipped in late September 2018 with installation due to be completed by the end of November.
