Union rallies opinion on Nine-Fairfax merger

Some 1147 users of journalists' union the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance's website are reported to have used its app to air views about the proposed merger of Fairfax Media into Nine Entertainment.

The MEAA says competition watchdog the ACCC should reject the merger and claims it contravenes Australian competition and consumer law. Its portal app - which has now closed - relayed submissions to the ACCC by email, after suggesting what users might like to say.

MEAA says there are "genuine concerns about what it will mean for independent journalism, for the future of 160 community, regional and rural publications and suburban Australia and New Zealand, and for the jobs and conditions of thousands of Fairfax employees.

"Under the takeover, it is not even clear what the future will be for the Fairfax metropolitan titles like the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, or the Australian Financial Review."

It calls for a robust and transparent public inquiry into the takeover.
