Five Jang Group daily editions and the jobs of almost 1000 staff are under threat as Pakistan's media crisis deepened.

The Pakistan Press Foundation has reported that Jang will close five newspapers including Daily Jang's Faisalabad and Peshawar editions.

Karachi-based evening newspapers, the Urdu-language Awam and English-language Daily News, and Lahore-based daily Inqibal is also to close.

Journalists are reported to be facing layoffs, pay cuts, non-payment of salaries and long delay in payment of salaries, with unions and journalist groups reacting strongly.

Pakistan Press Foundation says several media outlets have had to close as a result of serious financial crisis, with TV channels among those laying off journalists and slashing salaries.
