Online news site The New Daily - which claims its commercial position "improves each year" - has scored a coup with the recruitment of Alan Kohler as a columnist.

Chair of its board Cath Bowtell says the Australian finance commentator will write twice a week from next January.

Founded in 2013 primarily by two super funds, the loss-making masthead has been heavily criticised as a pit into which workers' retirement funds were being channelled. It does however, have a Walkley for 'scoop of the year' to its credit and recent research supporting reader satisfaction.

Recent contributor additions include Michael Pascoe, Dennis Atkins, Madonna King, Quentin Dempster, Kirsty Clements and Paul Bongiorno.

In a statement announcing Kohler's recruitment, executive officer Anna Aristotle said its owners "appreciate that our commercial position improves each year, but understand that we are still in start-up mode.

"We are building something quite special here and that takes time."
