Upgrade adds life to SPH Colorliners

Singapore Press Holdings is upgrading its four Goss Colorliner presses with a total of 24 new printing couples. On each press, two towers – currently capable of 4/2 printing – will be made up to full four-high capability. This means each will have five full towers, increasing full-colour capacity from 32 to 40 broadsheet pages in straight production. Upgrade of the first press will be completed in 2009, with the three presses following over the next 18 months. Anthony Cheng, senior vice president of SPH, says Colorliner is “a good press – but we are short of back-to-back colours, which are in demand. Having worked with Goss presses since the original purchase in 1995, he feels he and his team feel have optimised performance and print quality. With the meticulous maintenance programme in place, the Colorliner presses will remain competitive for the next 15 to 20 years: “Adding printing couples from Goss International is the best solution for us to gain colourr capacity and retain our competitive edge without having to invest in brand new presses,” he says. The SPH Print Centre delivers more than one million newspapers each day. In addition to the 14 SPH newspaper titles, it also prints regional editions of international newspapers including ‘Asahi Shimbun’, ‘Nihon Keizai Shimbun’, the ‘Asian Wall Street Journal’, the ‘Financial Times’ and the ‘International Herald Tribune’. SPH also publishes and produces more than 100 magazine titles in Singapore and the region.
