Facebook has issued new guidance for journalists on protecting themselves on the social media site.

This includes a dedicated page on the Facebook for Journalists site with advice on online safety including how to turn on two-factor authentication and manage privacy settings. Information on moderating comments, blocking harassment, controlling location sharing, protecting communications, reporting abusive content and impersonation, and responding to being hacked is also provided.

A Facebook Safety for Journalists guide will be available in languages including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, and instructional videos produced with the European Journalism Centre are on the site.

Facebook's Catherine Cole and head of global safety Antigone Davis say the resources are the result of consultation with the European Journalism Centre, the Committee to Protect Journalists, ConnectSafely, the Inter American Press Association and the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation.

"Since the start of the year, we have shared information designed to help people stay safe on Facebook. We also hosted the first in a series of research roundtables for journalists and social media managers to discuss their experiences of online harassment, with one session specifically devoted to female journalists.

"This is just the beginning. We know that there is more that can be done, and we are committed to helping ensure that journalists feel safe on Facebook as they connect their audiences with the stories that they find meaningful. We will continue our work on these important efforts and will share more in the coming months."
