Journalists killed: The bad news is good news in 2019

As 2019 nears an end, the worst kind of statistic: Only 49 journalists were killed this year.

While noting that the "historically low" figure is the lowest since 2003 - on average 80 journalists have been killed a year for the past two decades - Reporters Without Borders says 57 more are being held hostage and 389 are currently in prison.

The Paris-based group says the fall in numbers is a result of fewer journalists being killed in war zones. Almost two thirds (63 per cent) of journalists killed worldwide were murdered or deliberately targeted.

Pending verification, Reporters Without Borders has yet to add a further eight journalists murdered in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Honduras, Colombia and Haiti have yet to be added to the tally. And we're not at the end of the year yet.
