WAN-Ifra's Women in News initiative has landed a record 7 million Euros grant from the Swedish International Development Cooperation.

The four-year grant will enable expansion of the programme into new markets, launching of global research initiatives, and capacity to operate the programme throughout the Arab region and sub-Saharan Africa.

Women in News is currently active in 15 countries including southeast Asia, and works with publishers to increase leadership and voices of women in news.

The grant is the largest received to date by WAN-Ifra in support of its media freedom work, and continues a partnership with SIDA extendiong over almost a decade.

Head of Women in News and media development director Melanie Walker says she is are humbled by the measure of support. "We launched WIN almost ten years ago on a shoestring budget and a novel approach. As the programme has evolved, we've never lost sight of the programme's essence, that of local ownership and community."

WAN-Ifra chief executive Vincent Peyregne says the organisation has "a particular role" to play: "We are an industry that continues to trail behind others when it comes to diversity and inclusion.

"Our Women in News programme is dedicated to correcting the current imbalance, educate and sensitize media organisations to the financial and normative imperatives of striving for gender balance and equality."
