Danish publishing systems developer CCI Europe has bought Digital Collections, co-developer with ppi Media of the Content-X the editorial system used at the Bangkok Post.

CCI - which is itself part of Stibo - says the acquisition will operate in the same way as its Oslo-based subsidiary Escenic, which it bought in 2013, and plans to add DC's digital asset management capabilities to its CUE publishing platform.

Digital Collections has been wholly-owned by Ole Olsen (pictured) since 2015, when he bought out media company Gannett which had been an early partner.

Like ppi Media, Digital Collections is based in Hamburg, Germany, where it has worked together on a number of projects. Olsen was a would-be composer when he became involved in the media industry through a student job at Hamburger Morgenpost. After graduating, he started consulting to publishers and founded Digital Collections with two partners in 1991.

Last year, DC signed Funke Mediengruppe for a cloud based DC-X content hub, while Südkurier Online and Heinemann - with the DC Story Editor - and Norwegian magazine publisher Egmont joining a Content-X user group which has included Thailand's Bangkok Post since 2014.

Customers in India and Denmark are among more than 200 installations around the world.

In a statement today, both Olsen and CCI described the move as "the next step". "Welcoming DC to the CUE family means an extra boost to our innovation power," says CCI chief executive Dan Korsgaard. "The DC team is second-to-none when it comes to digital asset management solutions and we look forward to learning from and evolving with them."

The company says CUE is on a growth path, with orders from large media companies including The Economist, Polish broadcaster TVN and German news publishers Der Tagesspiegel, Handelsblatt, Badische Neueste Nachrichten and Ippen-Gruppe.

DC has an established global position through its DC-X digital asset management platform, used by the then Fairfax Media to manage its extensive image library. It enables the management of diverse content assets such as pictures, text, and videos in a central content repository and integrate external sources, such as RSS feeds and agency wires, into their content creation workflow.

CCI says DC-X will continue as a stand-alone digital asset management solution but will also be added as a native component of CUE. "DC's entry into the CUE family also strengthens the team behind the development of CUE," said marketing vice president Jacob Gjørtz.

DC will continue to operate as a separate company with own products and customer base, "collaborating closely with CCI and Escenic for future developments". No comment has been made about the ppi Media partnership.
